As women, we’re advertised to thousands of times each day. Whether it be by TV, magazines, or in stores, we’re always being shown ways to have the prettiest skin or the whitest teeth or the smokiest eyes. When my interest in wearing makeup first peaked, I had no idea where to start. Which brand should I buy? What goes on first? That lipstick is how much? Well no need to worry, ladies. I’ve put together a collection of products that I believe will give anyone a beautiful natural look without being overwhelming or breaking the bank.
This step is optional, but I always feel like my makeup goes on a million times smoother with primer underneath. This is Maybelline’s Baby Skin, and this is probably my 3rd or 4th repurchase because it works so well. Just take a nickel-size amount in your hand and massage it on your face. The amount in my hand in the photo is actually too much. I got a bit too primer happy haha.
I personally never wear foundation on an everyday basis and usually only apply it for a special occasion or when I need full coverage to last all day. Covergirl’s Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 foundation, and it’s perfect for any beginner. The range carries 14 shades, of which I’m the shade IVORY, and comes with a pump for easy application. I find it easiest to put about 3 or 4 pumps on the back of my hand then dot my forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin with my finger. You can also blend it out with our finger or try using a damp blending sponge like this ($5.99) one from Real Techniques. Don’t forget to blend down your neck though. No one wants that dreaded line of makeup vs. no makeup!
Like I mentioned above, I hardly ever wear foundation, and it’s because of this concealer! Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind Concealer is my all-time holy grail concealer and this is in the shade FAIR. Just apply it anywhere you feel you need extra coverage on top of foundation. Undereyes, nostrils, blemishes, eyelids, etc. It comes with a blending sponge where the product comes out so no need for any fancy brushes. This step and step 2 are interchangeable, but I find concealer works best on top of foundation. Heck, you may not even need concealer so feel free to skip this step altogether. And let’s all agree that it’s perfectly okay to make weird faces like these when we’re putting on makeup!
For some people, loose powder is a scary thought, but I find it to work better than most pressed powders. I have this one from NYC in the color TRANSLUCENT. I originally bought it because it was only $2.77 and there’s a ton of product! I actually used all of the powder in this container and have just been refilling it with baby powder. And it works wonders! That just goes to show that you don’t need any super fancy products to get the job done. Just apply it with a cotton pad, which you can find at most drugstores for maybe $1 or so, anywhere you feel your face might get oily throughout the day to really lock in your foundation and concealer. Alternatively, if you’re more comfortable with pressed powders, I recommend the Maybelline Fit Me Powder. It gives great coverage and applies just as easily!
Now that we’ve got our base finished, we’re getting into the fun part. Let’s add a little bit of color to the face with the NYX blush in PEACH. This blush gives such great color payoff while still remaining to look natural and not clownish. There’s no tacky glitter in it, but it still has a glowing-like sheen to it.
Highlighters are somewhat difficult to find at the drugstore, but this one by e.l.f. in PINKTASTIC is one that I’ve loved for a while. It’s actually considered a baked blush, but I find it to have more of a peachy reflection rather than a solid pink blush tone. So just pop it over your blush, either with your fingers or a brush, and you’ve got a beautiful natural glow to your face!
If I’m running super late and don’t have time to do a full makeup routine, I always opt for blush, mascara, lipstick, and BROWS. If you like a natural brow look, then by all means, skip this step, but if you want a little bit of a more polished look above those eyes, I’ve got you covered. I’m not sure if The Body Shop is considered drugstore, but this is the best brow pencil I’ve yet to find and it’s $10.50, which is only $2 or $3 difference than most drugstore brow products, but so much more worth the few extra bucks. I’m in the shade dark brown. Now I understand not everyone may have The Body Shop available to them, so a nice drugstore alternative would be Revlon’s Brow Fantasy Pencil & Gel. I find the one from The Body Shop to be more pigmented, and I found the Revlon pencil to work fine, but the gel didn’t do anything. Aside from that quick review, once you have your brow pencil of choice, begin to lightly fill in any sparce spots of your eyebrows and focus attention on your arch. When you’re happy with how the pencil looks, brush Maybelline’s Great Lash Clear Brow Mascara through your eyebrows to keep the pencil from coming off and to lock the hair in place. Trust me though, the tube doesn’t stay looking clear for very long after mixing it over the brow product. Mine just looks clear because I repurchased it for the 4th time and this is the first time I’m using this tube, haha.
The Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara is probably the best and newbie-friendly mascara I’ve found in the drugstore. It has a thin straight wand and doesn’t look intimidating coming at your eyeball. It gives so much volume after just a coat or two and the formula isn’t super messy like some mascaras can be. I recommend holding a small mirror below your face and tilting your head down to coat the bottom lashes first, then tilting back to apply product to your top lashes. This way none of the product from your top eyelashes will transfer onto your eyelid. Other great drugstore choices are Maybelline Lash Sensational and Maybelline Rocket Volum’ Express.
Last, but certainly not least, is adding a bit of color to our lips. I’m bascially a lipstick junkie, and I will do my makeup just so I can have a reason to put lipstick on. I know, it’s obsessive haha. There are tons of drugstore lip products to choose from, and you can even skip this step if you’d like, but I always feel like a little color on my lips gives a bit of life to my very pale face. My go-to lipstick is the Rimmel Lasting Finish Matte by Kate Moss in the shade 104. I can pretty much put this on without a mirror, it blends beautifully and lasts all day. No fancy lip liner or reapplication necessary.
