In the world of beauty, there are so many products out there today that finding the gems we’re looking for can just be a bit overwhelming. Sometimes, it’s so overwhelming that it’s difficult to know where to even start or come to a final purchase decision. I find mascara to be one of the areas that is the hardest to be really sure what our money is going towards because it’s not exactly tester-friendly like foundation or perfume. So how do you know which ones are actually worth it? Today, I’ve gathered 5 of the best mascaras I’ve ever tried with before and after photos to showcase just how amazing they can make your lashes look! Some are best for length, volume, or even watery eyes, so there’s definitely something here for everyone. So, the next time you’re in search of a new mascara and aren’t sure where to start, try one of these and I’m sure you’ll find a winner!
For consistency, all of these mascara formulas are non-waterproof and in the darkest black shade, and I have not curled my lashes in any of the photos below. As a disclaimer, I have contacts, and none of these mascaras flake or irritate the lenses either.
Maybelline Lash Sensational
This mascara has been a love for a long time and is even in fact my second tube of it. Since this wand curves to the natural lash line, it makes precision so easy, and I would highly recommend it to someone just starting out with makeup. If you have short lashes, this one is perfect for lengthening them. It’s a thin, wetter formula, which makes it super easy to build without clumping or giving “spidery” lashes. It dries quickly though, so don’t wait too long between coats. Normally, with wetter mascaras, they tend to run easily too, but I’ve actually taken naps with this on and woken up without any smudges. So, this one is nap-approved!
L’oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise
After being compared as a dupe for the infamous Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and in such high demand, I tried getting my hands on this drugstore beauty for months, and, let me tell you, it was worth the wait. I’m not sure what makes this mascara so magical because the wand looks pretty standard, but it just works. This is probably the most liquid formula to any mascara I’ve encountered, which causes it spread your lashes in full fan effect. Because it’s so wet, it’s really clean to take off as well. However, if your eyes tend to water, I would definitely recommend the waterproof version, because the original is not smudge proof whatsoever. But still, it’s a great everyday product that requires pretty much no fuss and gives great volume and length.
It Cosmetics Superhero
If you want instant volume, this mascara is where it’s at. The wand is fairly thin which helps to coat near the base of the lashes, for almost a faux tightline effect. I always find that trying to give bottom lashes volume is difficult, but because this wand is so thin, it’s also easy to build up close to the bottom lash line too. It literally gives volume all the way to very ends of your lashes. This mascara has a thicker formula, so it isn’t the easiest to remove, but if you want all day volume with no flaking or smudging, definitely give this one a try.
As you may notice in the first picture in this post, my Lancome mascara is so well-loved to the point that the label is completely gone. This is just an all around great mascara for both insane length and volume. The wand is “S”-shaped and just makes curving to the top and bottom lashes a breeze. It has a bit of a dryer formula, which I normally don’t like, but because it is dryer, it doesn’t clump your lashes together and makes it easier to build up.
Urban Decay Perversion
As you may notice from the picture above, the volume didn’t really change much from coat one to coat two. That’s because there’s so much volume in only one coat of this mascara, that you really don’t even need the second one. The wand is very wide, so it covers more lashes with one swipe, making it a great choice when you’re in a rush and want to quickly throw mascara on, but still want tons of volume too. The only downside to the wider wand is that sometimes it’s too large to easily coat bottom lashes. This one is perfect if your eyes water often, but don’t want do deal with the mess of constantly wearing impossible-to-remove waterproof mascaras.
